No good resolutions for the New Year yet?

What about writing a thoughtful post for hungarian.news once a while? Something about Hungary, perhaps personal experiences, perhaps an analysis of ongoing developments, perhaps background of actual news? Or perhaps something that I didn’t mention?

Well I did have an idea for a short “opinion piece”, but haven’t got round to it yet and am not sure about the quality of my writing. No promises, but will see what I can do in the next week or two (if I get a bit of time free from work, as a freelancer I can’t always know in advance)

The Guardian today has a scathing report on Hungary and what might happen in the coming elections:
Hungary election: outsider from the right backed by left to beat Viktor OrbánSix opposition parties have united behind Péter Márki-Zay for crucial spring vote.
It starts with retelling the story of you know who …
Sorry, can’t link to it.
an MEP from prime minister Viktor Orbán’s ruling party, Fidesz, had fled down a drainpipe to evade a police raid on a “gay orgy” that broke lockdown rules. The MEP, who later resigned, had been an architect of a clause in Hungary’s constitution defining marriage as a heterosexual institution.

Wolfi I am becoming more dubious of the actual unity of the six parties behind Márki-Zay. There seems to be a – what if Márki-Zay loses mentality- how can our parties emerge from that real possibility. There seems to be some type of delusion that if Orban wins again there can be a tomorrow for the opposition. Putin and his United Russia have complete electoral hegemony, yet Putin is tightening his grip (see https://www.ridl.io/en/the-worst-year-in-the-history-of-post-soviet-russia/ ). I expect Orban would do the same if he and Fidesz win. I don’t think a post electorally defeated Hungarian opposition can count on the EU as providing a protective shield ensuring their survival.

To Márki-Zay’s credit he has publicly argued basically there is no tomorrow for Hungarian democracy if Orban wins. On the other hand he has raised the specter that some of the parties in the coalition have Fidesz operatives in them, and insinuates at least more than one may be an elected opposition MP. But he reveals no names saying he is not trying to commit political suicide leading up to the election.

It is almost as distressing as thinking of Joe Biden running again in 2024 here in the USA, he would be 82 years old at the time of his searing in event if he did manage to win.

By the way a group of US Army veterans I am associated with are now on the Island of Grenada vacationing I am glad I didn’t go because of the Covid pandemic. We all were part of the US invasion of that invasion to crush a Marxist pro-Cuban revolution. One retired officer sent me an email from the Island where he described how nice the Island is, but how its economy is built around tourism and offshore banking and tax haven corporate registration. I guess we made Grenada safe for capitalism and did indeed crush the communists.

Dear friends,
I am adding here an link to a NY Times article about the evolution of Hungary and its relationship within EU these last years.
Not much surprises for our community but interesting to have the point of view of EU leadership on this topic.
I hope you’ll find this interesting also.
