Updated April 11th, 2022 – During the evening the results will come in. Beginning with the districts. The results of these elections depend on the party lists and the district candidates. Parliament has 199 seats, the majority are 100 seats, supermajority 133 seats. The percentages have little influence who will be the winner, since in the districts the plurality is already enough.

Counted so far: 98.96 %

German list1

Seats based on lists, shown are all 6 participating parties arranged as on the ballot, and the German nationality list. Nationality lists with less eligible voters than needed for a seat are not shown. If the threshold for parties is not reached no seats are allocated. Percentages and seats can be change by time. Neither lost votes nor votes from abroad are reflected on the evening of election day. The allocation of seats of party lists is done according the D’Hondt method, which can result in a slightly different seat allocation, but this effect is smaller if only 2 parties of comparable size are competing.

* addition of the percentages and seats of the 2018 running single parties DK, Jobbik, LMP, Momentum, and the joint list of MSZP and P. If you add Együtt (now dissolved, the only 2018 MP of Együtt is running for Unity today) it would be 48.91 %

Won districts. Since there is a single winner in each district the percentage is left out. In 2018 FIDESZ got nearly all seats with less than half the votes.

At this stage, if this is the best Unity for Hungary can achieve or even if we assume they could do better next time, it’s hard to see how Fidesz could ever be defeated.

this doesn’t usually happen here, don’t forget like everything else in Hungary, the polling companies are usually closed linked to Fidesz or to the opposition, so truly “independent” organizations are either rare or non-existent

Of course we (they) have thought about them, but imagine holding an exit poll in Russia, would you trust the organisation conducting the poll and say you voted against Putin and his stupid war (at the risk of ending up like some/all of his major opponents)? Thankfully Hungary is not at that stage, but in some cases people are afraid to talk politics, especially with people they don’t know

Projected:
Unity for Hungary 56 seats
FIDESZ 135 seats
Others (Mi Hazánk) 8 seats

In other words, another 2/3 majority for Fidesz at the moment, but only 28% of the votes have been counted and processed so far. Usually the counting is quicker in smaller, provincial areas with fewer votes, and the big cities come later, so it’s possible Fidesz won’t have a super-majority but difficult to believe the opposition has any chance of winning from here

Rigged it maybe, but the number of votes cast for the opposition was disappointing. Ok, the opposition has been working against a bent system, but the arguments are pretty obvious. We just have to remove Hungary from the list of nations that strive for civilised standards. Sad

István, thanks a million for your great work covering the elections as well as over the last few months since you set up this site.

I guess most of us on here are feeling deflated and disappointed and the discussion will soon move on to what happens next. My own personal feelings are that the Opposition did almost everything that it could this time, and yet still performed worse than 4 years ago. I wonder what others think? Is there any future strategy that could change things for the better? I’m not thinking about recriminations here, because for once I’m lost for words and don’t have any ideas at the moment…

I never imagined that Fidesz would prevail over the united opposition by 18% points and that on top of that Mi Hazánk (which is loyal to Fidesz in most cases) would get into the Parliament.

However, I did warn people here that the opposition is in a deep shit.It is dead outside Budapest and Hungary was a fully fledged autocracy.

There was a campaign on the oppositions side, true, but the voters and especially rural voters don’t care about the opposition.

The difference in individual districts outside Budapest is staggering, almost unfathomable.

Not a few points, but 30, even 40% points (difference).

But a 20-25% difference is completely normal now. The opposition (and note that it includes 5-6 parties) for all prctical purposes does not exist outside Budapest.

Fidesz even took back places like Pécs, Dunaújváros, Miskolc, and the towns outside Budapest which elected opposition mayors in 2019. Its advantage is insane.

I don’t know what to do, but I tried to warn you but all I got was that I was the fidesznik etc. troll (whe in fact I am anything but).

Next: the Democratic Party in the US will lose in a historic defeat and in the next election the GOP president will have control over both houses, and the Scotus.

The prevailing ideology now is right-wing, very much so, but to the extent there is left-wing flavour in the prevailing ideology, the right-wing politicians provide those policies, not the traditional left-wing politicians.

The outlook is terrible in Hungary, this was a complete KO – even if we always have to remind ourselves this was not a real, democratic election, but a rigged, managed, autocratoc one.
