Neither Emily Rauhala nor Beatriz Ríos the authors of a rare significant Washington Post article today on Hungary follow Hungarian politics regularly so Orban’s efforts to create a new right wing entity within the EU is missing entirely from this article. (Titled “With ‘Make Europe Great Again,’ Hungary taunts allies, touts hard right” https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/07/01/hungary-orban-presidency-council-european-union/) The so called Patriots for Europe ( Hazafiak Európáért) group is not even discussed nor was Orban’s endless efforts to build a unified European rightwing discussed.

This article from Telex today is infinitely better (https://telex.hu/kulfold/2024/07/01/eu-europai-unio-tanacsa-boka-kovacs-zoltan-vesenykepesseg-vedelmi-ipar-strategiai-menetrend) but I doubt that these WAPO reporters even read Telex using translation software.

In particular the Telex article discusses the slogan of Orban’s presidency “Make Europe Great Again”, replacing America with Europe from the previous election slogan of former US President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump. At the Hungarian program presentation on the slogan it was justified the by saying, among other things, that it shows the perception that the EU can act independently.

The Post article seems not to grasp that Orban by adopting Make Europe Great Again is promoting an actual break with the US NATO alliance and American hegemony over Europe. This is very similar to the current Putin line on the need to break US global power because it is pushing the world towards nuclear war. In fact the Post’s article only mentions Orban’s opposition to EU accession talks with Ukraine in the abstract, never noting Russia sees it as a harbinger of nuclear war with Russia.

Trump actually accepts the Russian argument and prefers an isolationist stance relating to Europe and probably a full removal of the U.S. military presence from Europe.

Trump’s vision is that the global threat to the US is China. There are unfortunately many US generals and even more admirals that agree with that threat assessment.

I would say that my own daughter, a US Army Lt Colonel, who along with all commissioned officers must carry out direct commands from the President does not have immunity under the Military Code of Justice from prosecution for crimes they commit in execution of criminal order. But the President that orders a criminal act does have total immunity under this decision because under the Constitution it’s a core Presidential function.

As most men of my age, I was drafted into the “Néphadsereg” (People’s Army) during the “Socialism” (Communism).

I remember that in the booklet “Szolgálati Szabályzat” (military regulations or rules of conduct – which is a good translation?), there was a paragraph like this:

‘a soldier shall refuse any order that harms civilians or unlawful in any way’
(unfortunately, I do not remember the exact wording and I cannot find the booklet on the internet).

I was very proud that this paragraph was in the booklet, although I knew it was of little practical use. Say I am executed for refusing the order then rehabilitated posthumously)

The fuel fumes on the turbine deck left me without a sense of smell and the noise reduced my hearing.

If you look through the surface and listen through the words, it becomes obvious that Orbán performs an act of “peacewashing” Putin.
Helping the primary aggressor with the heaviest foot on the gas-pedal appear like a peace-seeking

Orban had an op-Ed in a US weekly news magazine in the last few days see https://www.newsweek.com/orban-point-nato-peace-not-endless-war-opinion-1915287 . It seems to thrill Republicans in the USA who like how Orban just eliminates in his essay the fact that Putin invaded Ukraine and declared it to have a Nazi government.

Orban never in this article even in passing mentions Putin’s characterization of the Ukrainian government as a Nazi regime that he repeatedly said had to be removed. Now like Orban, Putin wants to appear to support peace and Putin sees the election of Trump as a possible pathway to his version of peace which is the eventual removal of the current government of Ukraine by force and its replacement with a Russian friendly regime.

Yes I actually know one of the older Trotskyists who is from one of the parties you with the “other left-wing: 13 to 16 seats.”

I met him in South Vietnam and he was a journalist for Le Monde back then. Since I do not speak French and we both spoke Vietnamese so we conversed in Vietnamese.

He got trapped in An Loc with us in 1972 when we were under siege by the communists. We agreed about nothing in terms of politics but we still became friends.

I warned him not to tell the VC political officers he was a Trotskyist (Ligue communiste révolutionnaire) if the town fell to the communists because they might shoot him, since they were all hard core Stalinists.

He laughed at that, but I was not joking. His old party became the New Anticapitalist Party (NOUVEAU PARTI
ANTICAPITALISTE) and is part of the New Popular Front. A South Vietnamese intelligence officer and hard anticommunist wanted to shoot him in 1972 so I lied and told him the CIA would not like that so he said ok, but he stays away from the ARVN he said ok (được rồi). So I guess I saved his life and we have been friends ever since.

As far as I know there is no provision allowing for a full expulsion of a member nation from NATO, or even suspend a nation. At least that is what I recall Eva Balogh writing years ago, or am I confused about that?

There was an attempt to kill Trump at a political rally in Pennsylvania today. The shooter was 200 to 300 yards out on a rooftop. The shooter using an AR 15 rifle got off 8 shots wounding Trump’s ear and killing a person in the audience and critically wounding two other in the audience.

We know nothing as yet about the shooter.

As a reserve US Army officer I was highly accurate with an M16 rifle out to about 184 meters without a scope and I was not qualified
to be a sniper.

I have an old Cold War era SKS semiautomatic rifle (made about 1963) that uses the same round as the modern AK 47 and I can hit targets out to 183 meters with that rifle too.

Most likely I would go to northern Wisconsin where we have our second home if a civil war starts which still is unlikely. It is close to a Native American reservation and they are anti Trump with their own police force. My wife who is Native American speaks the Siouan language and is close to the tribe even though she is a Seneca Iroquois.

The whites outside the reservation are heavily Trump supporters and hate the tribe (the Ho-Chunk Nation) to be honest. That seems as good a place as any other to make a stand if it came to that point.

My wife is an excellent shot herself as is her sister. Their father also an Iroquois taught them to defend them selves as his own mother was raped by a white man when he was a young boy in the early 1900s and witnessed the attack. He stabbed her attacker but he knocked him out. He vowed his daughters would be prepared for that possibility.
