Merry Christmas to All! Maybe we could all spare a few minutes to think about our former host Eva S. Balogh and her family…?
Happy holidays to everybody from here too!
And I’m thinking of our dear Eva every day and just hope that all her efforts and the work of our new host, dear István, are not in vain.
It’s quiet around here so sometimes I feel that people have given up on Hungary – just hoping that I’m wrong here.
It doesn’t concern us old people too much, we’ve lived our lives – and they were good.
But for the next generations I feel sad.
Indeed since Eva’s passing I have thought of her a great deal, especially since my immediate family are essentially quarantined in our home until this Sunday due to a daughter contracting Covid. My wife and I have tested negative for Covid, but effectively both had to put ourselves at some risk of infection to get tested. The lines for testing are simply mind blogging in most major urban areas of the USA. At home test kits are sold out in the Chicago area and even Amazon will take weeks to get one to you. Amazingly there were people in my line that were unmasked, and there were some who were visibly sick, but they did not know if they had influenza or Covid.
There are also some people being found dead in their homes and apartments here in Chicago, generally older people like myself and my wife. One was a friend from the military, who I and his family tried to call repeatedly, he lived in a building I own. So I called our maintenance staff who in turn let in the Chicago Police, for a well being check, who found him dead from a possible heart attack. There was no detailed examination ordered by public heath officials because of a past history of heart problems, and a death certificate was issued listed heart failure based on his history. We know that abnormal cardiac biomarker are common in Covid-19 that can cause direct cardiac injury in some cases. Formally here in Chicago deaths directly attributable to Covid are currently very small, only 0.3 per 100,000 residents in the City, yet the formal positivity rate on testing this week has increased to 9.2% from 4.5% last week based on an average daily test rate of over 35,000 tests a day in just the city.
Eva was indeed a deeply secular person, but did seem to appreciate Hungarian traditions surrounding Christmas. Due to the wonders of the internet driven economy we have all the Christmas elements for the holiday isolated here in our big home in the city of Chicago. I will watch eventually a video of Christmas mass from Esztergom which I have attended myself in the past. I am unclear if this is virtual reality or unreality to be honest sometimes. I am thankful that Istvan has taken up the burden of bogging about contemporary Hungary in Eva’s tradition.
To You All:
Merry Christmas – Kellemes Karácsonyt!
PS: István respect and thanks for picking up Eva’s baton to continue the struggle for a democratic Hungary and enjoy the mail!
I wish everyone peaceful holidays, the EU a backbone and Hungary a democratic government. For this I wish you István Pläsier in writing and many famous fellow readers who take up your thoughts to get delectate to make it more difficult for our dictator to dictate … 🙂 … and stay healthy.
Happy holidays to all!
Istvan thank you so much for providing us with a trusted place to read about Hungary.
Boldog Karácsonyt to all! 🎄🎄🎄
Merry Christmas!
Let us start to name some of the central global problems.
Who and how is fooling ordinary people with destructive results?
Why are lies planted on all kinds of social media platforms?
Please try to guess the roots of these measures?
Waiting for your replies.

Happy holidays to all! Miss Eva and her incredible output. Istvan, thank you for all you are doing! I hope Hungary in 2022 gets better or EU penalises them as much as possible. On a personal note, after my having the booster shot, I and my family now have tested positive with some symptoms. Appetite is fine though so far. 😋 Never expected it, so a shock. London is rampant. The ratio is 1 in 20 Londoners have it but I suspect it is possibly 1 in 15.
Keep well!
Merry Christmas to everyone! And a big thank you to István for his initiative of opening Hungarians.news. Happy holidays to you all! 🎄🎄🎄
This short essay published by Telex on Christmas day https://telex.hu/telextarcak/2021/12/25/grecso-krisztian-megelni-az-idei-karacsonyt-telextarca-tarcanovella-karacsony-irodalom is well worth reading. It translates reasonably well via google too for those non-Hungarian readers.
Although late, happy holidays everybody. I am glad you picked it up Istvan,
I hope for good articles and fine discussions next year.
