A Vote for 729 Forint?

The infamous regulated price for chicken carcasses and a few other food items saves the average citizen 243 Forint (0.68 €) monthly Policy Agenda calculated ►HU. The decree is valid for 3 months, until the election month. I am afraid the administration costs for the groceries will be way higher than the loss of profit. Just this morning in his Friday prayer Orbán declared that these 243 Ft would stop the inflation ►HU on food prices. This is also a good moment to have a look on the regimes permanently repeated declaration that Hungarians have “such a good life” thanks to Orbán.

The most recent data concerning consumption per capita and price level in the EU have been published. An average Hungarian had 6 680 € nets in 2020. Only Bulgarians have less, 5 150 €. Romania took over Hungary! Both in absolute numbers and in purchase power! Everybody who had told me that would happen before Orbán took office I would have said that Romania wouldn’t get to that point during this century. Orbán made that possible as well! Yes, costs of life are cheaper in Hungary than European average. However, this doesn’t make a change at the end of the list. Bulgaria behind Hungary, the rest scored better. We are at 44.41 % of EU average in absolute terms, in purchase power 70.11 % (Bulgaria 63.61 %). In both categories Luxembourg scores best with 28 970 € or 192.92 % in absolute terms or 148.94 % in purchase power of EU average hvg reported ►HU. Besides the fact that these numbers alone are already devastating only 0.03 % is added to our income by the chicken carcasses decree. This is what Orbán calls stopping inflation! This hvg article shows clearly that the situation emerged a lot during the corona crisis – and the financial handling of it. And these are the number that turned bad just after the purchase power the Hungarian earnings were back on the level of 2008, the level before in the USA the banking crisis started. While all countries around including Romania and Bulgaria (which reduces the distance to Hungary every year) are in better shape now, than in 2008, while Hungary is under the level of the “socialist” times and Orbán tells the world that life in Hungary would be so good ►HU.

Further there is much more unemployment in Hungary than the regime tells us. According to official announcements of the ministry of human resources there are only 180 000 without work, while nearly 300 000 are unemployed regarding the way the International Labour Organisation (ILO) defined, the KSH informed. The best rates have the centre and Northwest of the country, high unemployment rates are found in the South and East with Csongrád-Csanád as positive exception, the worst in the North with 11.4 % in Nógrád, while Budapest has only 2.4 % and best is Veszprém with 1.4 % informs portfolio ►HU. As many as 40.3 % of unemployed don’t get any financial benefits, the number of long time unemployed persons, this means longer than one year, is with 16.8 % more hard growing, and finding work lasts in average 490 days or 16 months ►HU!

This while housing has been become unbelievable expensive. During the first years of Orbán’s rule prices went down, but have stabilised during the years 2013 and 2014. Since 2015 real estate prices have more than doubled, while in the EU prices went up 39 % in Hungary the prices went up with 104 %. More than in every other EU country. Since only a few Hungarians rent their home the “only” 20 % rent increase (against 9 % in the EU), doesn’t help a lot, a rate which is again the highest in the entire EU ►HU. No wonder that only last year the mortgages went up with 40 % as 444 reported ►HU.

Yes, some may believe Orbán that cheaper chicken carcasses will make their life easier. Right now both are promises, the cheaper prices and the relief for the people. When it becomes reality on February 1st these people might be surprised that their shopping won’t be cheaper, that monthly 243 Forint can’t be felt during daily shopping. We will see, whether this won’t backfire, as soon as the people again will be confronted with the reality. I still remember how much the people were annoyed about the propaganda in 2019 that their wages went up so much, while these higher wages were in fact hard needed to pay higher taxes and the same amount of food.

And this is the point I want to quote an interview with Péter Márki-Zay about remarkable changes which would happen with him as PM ►HU: “I consider the introduction of the Euro, the fact that Hungary wants to belong to the core of Europe and not to the periphery of a two-speed Europe. The Euro is also an important issue in terms of the fight against inflation, wage catching up, the resilience of pensions, and a value choice as well. Hungary has to decide whether it wants to belong to a developing, progressive core Europe, or to a periphery created by Orbán and the Poles, where the standard of living is increasingly lagging behind that of the core countries. Where the EU can tolerate the lack of press freedom, the corruption, and which can function as a great assembly plant, as Viktor Orbán dreamed about. [….] Further accountability is important, so that we are no longer a country without consequences. [….] A message must be sent to all politicians that we expect the country getting rich and not them filling their own pockets. We want to create our own anti-corruption prosecutor’s office, overseen by Ákos Hadházy as minister without a portfolio.” All these things would tribute to a solution of the problems that can’t be solved with 729 Ft spread over 3 months.

243 Ft. a month!!!
I guess perception is important in politics, so the opposition should try and get this information over to the average voter, because the government will no doubt be promoting these measures to show how much they are trying to protect us from harder times…

Off topic to the issue of inflation and food prices in Hungary. I found it interesting that Magyar Nemzet ran this article today https://magyarnemzet.hu/kulfold/2022/01/johnson-es-scholz-moszkva-nagy-arat-fog-fizetni-ha-tamad because it totally excludes what the Hungarian foreign ministry thinks about the idea of a “possible Russian invasion of Ukraine should be followed by severe economic sanctions” imposed by NATO nations. Nor does the article ever mention the phone call President Biden personally made to leaders of the Bucharest Nine group — Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia lasting 40 minutes on Jan 13 briefing his discussions with Putin. Magyar Nemzet and therefore Orban I guess see concern over a possible Russian invasion of a nation bordering Hungary as an issue for the UK and Germany, or an individual like NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as if Hungary was very distant from all of this and not a NATO member.

I have some concerns about Pápa Air Base in Hungary relating to the potential crisis in Ukraine, it is the Main Operating Base of the SAC C-17 aircraft for NATO and a critical link in what is called multinational Strategic Airlift Capability consortium. This base would play a major role in the resupply of some military munitions for Ukraine coming from the USA in the event of a Russian invasion, unless Hungary is denying access to it for any NATO resupply missions.

I know US Air Force reserve members that believe it or not used to fly direct from an air field in Milwaukee Wisconsin (General Mitchell International Airport – Air Reserve Station) to Pápa Air Base refueling in the air on occasion. One of their retired pilots is a close friend and he too is worried about this situation and we discussed it just last night. His Reserve unit was the 440th Airlift Wing and it is now located in North Carolina, Really the Fidesz controlled media has been silent on that issue. Papa has air defense systems in place and hardened hangers to protect planes in the case of a Russian air assault on it which was presumed in NATO planning if hostiles broke out. The fact that the air base has ground to air defenses and a Hungarian unit manning them has rarely been discussed in the Hungarian media.

Istvan, I think Hungary is tacitly supporting Russia over Ukraine in any case, but can’t actually say so because it wants to stay under the NATO umbrella for the moment, so it’s best to ignore the potential impending conflict or claim that “it’s nothing to do with us”. In reality, Hungary is a small player in terms of geopolitics, and will not openly call for economic sanctions against the “boss” in Moscow

This article https://telex.hu/kulfold/2022/01/21/surgos-targyalast-tart-az-amerikai-es-az-orosz-kulugyminiszter-az-ukran-valsagrol indicates that among the Russian demands to NATO would be one that could impact Hungary Telex states: “Already in December 2021, Russia came up with a demand for NATO to withdraw foreign troops and military equipment from the territory of countries that were not yet members of NATO in 1997, which it also declared unacceptable in NATO’s public resolutions and dialogue with Russia. Thus, the Russian claim also applies to Hungary, a member of NATO since 1999.”

There are not any US Army forces permanently stationed in Hungary but US Army forces have been there before on training missions, but there are often US Air Force forces at Pápa Air Base. The US Air Force News Service has stated this in the past “The U.S. Air Force presence at Papa AB represents approximately one-third of the more than 130 multinational military personnel assigned to the wing. Some Airmen bring their families for a multi-year tour and others come for a one-year unaccompanied assignment and leave their families at Aviano or other home bases. Papa AB is not like Ramstein or Aviano: there is no base exchange, no commissary, no gas station, no gas cards and no American restaurants. The only U.S. specific services available at the base are a U.S. post office and a U.S.-led flight medicine clinic for routine health exams.” (https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/110208/hungary-based-airmen-write-new-chapter-in-mulitinational-operations/ )

Has anyone seen a response from the Hungarian foreign ministry to this Russian demand?

This video about how the Fidesz controlled media questions Orban https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVeWzbrwIlk&t=508s is really good. You can also see it here https://telex.hu/belfold/2022/01/21/orban-viktor-miniszterelnok-radiointerju-nyilatkozat-kossuth-radio-nagy-katalin.

Translation (from German) of Szijjártó’s comments in the RT article as cited by István:

We know that Russia has submitted its proposals [on security guarantees]. NATO has a different approach, but it has to be discussed. Don’t say there will only be sanctions. What we want is continued discussions in order to come to a normal solution.

What we want is a normalization of the situation. We want NATO and Russia to mutually trust each other. We don’t want NATO and Russia to be pitted against each other as enemies.

I think the key to resolving the gas crisis in Europe lies in filling up storage capacities and concluding long-term contracts with the supplier.

As far as energy questions are concerned, I have to tell you that we are very satisfied with our cooperation with Russia. In my experience everything that we agreed with the Russians was always observed on time and as agreed. We have a lot of respect for this fact. This is a very good experience.

Hungary’s leading diplomat reminded those who criticize the energy cooperation with Russia that political statements will not heat households in Europe.

Is there any other NATO country impacted by this demand from the Russian Federation that has not outright rejected it? None that I know of and the USA had called these demands for a NATO retreat a non-starter.

https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0562 This press release came out yesterday evening it’s title is Treasury Sanctions Russian-Backed Actors Responsible for Destabilization Activities in Ukraine. Among the more amazing things in it is this passage: “Russia has directed its intelligence services to recruit current and former Ukrainian government officials to prepare to take over the government of Ukraine and to control Ukraine’s critical infrastructure with an occupying Russian force. At the heart of this effort are Taras Kozak (Kozak) and Oleh Voloshyn (Voloshyn), two current Ukrainian Members of Parliament from the party led by Victor Medvedchuk (Medvedchuk), who is already subject to U.S. sanctions for his role in undermining Ukrainian sovereignty in 2014. Medvedchuk maintains close ties with the Kremlin, and also took part in directing these activities.“

It looks as though Putin’s team went into the KGB archives and dusted off the plans for the 1956 invasion of Hungary complete with replacement officials loyal to Russia.

This playing the “Food father” of the Viktor is only ridiculous.
A bigger problem is the system of dependency the regime created.
“You know where to put the cross, otherwise….” Fill in the negative consequences yourself. “If the left wing wins the election, you can forget your own appartment”
And then this “voluntary” decrees of the regime, if you don´t do it you get punished.
For example, the GPs who have to advertise one weekend in January to put jabs in the arms of the people without any guidance what to inject, and don´t know how many injections to order. When they don´t obey the get punished with big fines.
Today an article in the Szabad Európa showed what happened with the public schools during the governing of the regime. It is so sad.

This is a passage from Russia’s proposed treaty with the USA, that the US has agreed to respond to in written form today in Geneva. The passage reads: “The Parties shall refrain from deploying their armed forces and armaments, including in the framework of international organizations, military alliances or coalitions, in the areas where such deployment could be perceived by the other Party as a threat to its national security, with the exception of such deployment within the national territories of the Parties.

The Parties shall refrain from flying heavy bombers equipped for nuclear or non-nuclear armaments or deploying surface warships of any type, including in the framework of international organizations, military alliances or coalitions, in the areas outside national airspace and national territorial waters respectively, from where they can attack targets in the territory of the other Party.”
This of course would mean Hungary would lose most of its nuclear shield in close proximity to Russia (France would be the closest NATO ally with nuclear weapons), yet Russia would be free to have nuclear armed weapons launch ready in close proximity to Hungary on its own soil.
I wonder if Orban is still thrilled with his friend Putin? The entire Russian drafted treaty is available on line in Russian and English.
